Many of us usually associate massage with the physical benefits, but it can also have huge effects on our mental wellbeing. Rather than think of our bodies as a collection of separate parts, we should consider it an intricate, high functioning machine of interrelated parts which all need to function together to perform at optimum. When our physical body is not quite 100% it can have a negative effect on our mind, but also visa versa, when our mind isn’t quite right it can effect our physical well-being. Anxiety, for example can cause us to contract muscles as we feel fear, which is our stress response bracing for potential danger. Massage reduces anxiety by giving our body a window of time away from that response; kickstarting the calmer branch of our autonomic nervous system aka the parasympathetic nervous system. The massage also gives a direct command to the muscles to chill out. If you’re interested in experiencing this for yourself, please do get in touch. I have nearly 20 years worth of experience in helping people with anxiety, trauma, and what most of us consider to be just regular stress, (which is not to be underestimated.)
